We’re Cruising Now!

We’re Cruising Now!

Allison’s reaching new milestones daily it seems. Today she showed her cruising skills, moving from her Leapfrog learning table to the coffee table (learning table was next to the coffee table). She managed to turn her body and feet 90 degrees – to position herself in front of the coffee table – and then move further down the coffee table itself. Steve was the first to witness this. I saw it replayed a few minutes later. She’s still a bit wobbly but getting more confident every day.

Not only is she moving around readily, but she’s also waving her arm and hand bye-bye. Last Friday she waved bye to Patty as Patty was leaving. Today she waved to Steve when he walked into her bedroom this morning. This continued throughout the day – I think I even saw her waving to Bisco under the kitchen table!

Leapfrog Fun

We’re the bowels…

Steve almost spit out his dinner tonight trying not to laugh. Several weeks ago Katherine “graduated” from the Leapfrog Letter Factory to the Word Factory DVD (although she still loves watching both). With the former she learned all her letters (upper and lower) and phenomes. With the latter she’s now learning about vowels and how letters make words. One of the first songs on the DVD goes like this “A E I OU, we’re the vowels, we’re the glue. We stick words together, we’re very sticky letters…” Tonight we were singing away as Katherine was scribbling on her easel and Steve and I were eating dinner. Katherine’s rendition went something like this “A E I O U, we’re the bowels, we’re the glue…” Needless to say we think we set her straight…”Vvvv, not Bbbbb”

Reading books now has new meaning for Katherine. Her favorites these days include Amelia Bedelia, Carl and Clifford. I’ve started to use the cover pages as a way to have Katherine identify letters and me to sound them out. She said tonight “R E D B O O K” – and we sounded out “RED.” Anyway, we’ll keep persevering to see when she gets to the next stage of putting together “B and AT, C and AT, etc.”

Allison’s On the Move!!

Yes…Allison is now crawling. She took her first observed forward crawl this past Monday morning. I was watching Allison while Katherine and Patty were off on an outing. I was riffling through plastic containers full of Katherine’s old clothes. Allison was rolling around with her toys. I looked over to see her reaching for a toy just out of reach. What did she do? She schooched her foot underneath her. But instead of rolling to the side as she had been doing, she pushed off and inched forward. Since Monday she’s gained speed – even Patty on Friday (after only two days away) exclaimed that Allison was moving much more quickly – almost anywhere she wanted to go at will.

What else? She is now walking forward when we’re holding her body or hands. This also started early last week. On Wednesday I took the girls to my mom’s house for lunch. Allison surprised her grandma by walking back and forth between us – with us holding her body – slowly but surely putting one foot in front of another. Now she’s gotten very good at asserting her will. She turns her head in the direction she wants to go. Once we help position her body in the right place she starts to move her feet!

Her other source of massive excitement is the coffee table in the family room and the ottoman in her nursery. What’s the attraction? She can stand and bang her hand against the coffee table and inspect the bumper around the table. I also put toys on top so she can bat them down, have me pick them up. On Tuesday we spent a whole 15 minutes or so hanging out at the coffee table. Anytime we’re near it, she’ll roll to it and give me the look “Get me up, will you please?”

The next development floored Patty – although I have yet to see this. Yesterday Allison was at Patty’s sisters house playing with a wooden table toy. She put her hands on the top of the table from a sitting position and pulled herself to a standing position!

Now that she’s more active, Allison is chowing down much more food. Previously she’d eat maybe 6-8 spoonful’s of oatmeal consisting of one tablespoon of dried oatmeal and a little formula. Now she’ll eat twice that amount more quickly. For lunch and dinner she eats easily two ice cube sized portions of sweet potato, peas/brown rice, carrots, or summer veggie medley, etc. She also eats very thinly diced banana pieces from my fingers. I managed to coax her into picking up a piece – although she’s very adept at picking up her O’s and stuffing them in her mouth with a pincer grip.

Tea Party

Katherine and I went to a small little tea house in Redmond last Friday much to her delight. The whole tea party thing started the week before when I told her that we had a special surprise: we were going to a real tea house on Friday with her little friend and her mother! For two whole days she kept asking “is today Friday?” I also told her that we were going to use real tea cups and a real tea pot. After she climbed out of her tub, we had this exchange:

Katherine: “Is it bigger than this?” waving her pink tea kettle from her play kitchen

Christine: “Yes, it’s much bigger”

Katherine: running back and waving her beige pitcher “is it bigger than this?”

Christine: “Yes”

Katherine: waving at tea kettles on her PJs “how about this?”

The next two days she informed my mom, Patty and Dad that she was going to a tea party. I was very clear with her that she HAD to listen to me and use manners at the tea house if she ever wanted to back. On Friday she tried sooo hard to behave. We ended up waiting half an hour to be seated since we had four little girls with moms. The girls used the opportunity to read books with us. Then we sat at the tables waiting for our tea pots and food to arrive.

Katherine’s eyes bugged out when she got her real porcelain tea cup and saucer. She first tried her tea “I don’t like this” and then settled on my strawberry and cream herbal tea. We negotiated that she would get one very small brown sugar cube with it, and she drank it very carefully with both hands.

Then the food on the platter arrived. Jam sandwiches, carefully cut fruit and a small round brownie were arranged artfully on a pink platter. Her eyes got even bigger. Katherine ended up eating all the sandwiches, half the fruit and the brownie. She loved the experience and informed me that she wanted to go back!

Listening to Mom and Dad

Steve and I are working on our overall approach to discipline. With Katherine getting more adroit at “negotiation” we’re having to be very careful about the precedents that we set. For instance, on a couple rare occasions, Katherine managed to venture out of the house in her ballerina outfit. Now she is pushing very hard to do so again telling me “I wore my ballerina outfit to Subway!” She also wants to wear this outfit in the mornings before school and after school and then after her bath over her PJs!! Needless to say, we’re setting down some clear guidelines about the ballerina outfit not leaving the house, not being worn before school or over her PJs…

We decided to resurrect the potty training rocks telling her that when she fills a small cup with rocks that she can have specific tea party book now residing on top of the fridge and have a small tea party. She has the choice of having a tea party at home (courtesy of yours truly) or at the little tea house in Redmond – ONLY after she fills her cup. Surprisingly she says that she wants a tea party at home, with Allison, me and Steve!

The good news is that she responds well to semi-bribery, now helping to clean up her toys before bed to earn a rock, and that we’ve got a very attractive incentive model when we need it. She wasn’t very excited about getting her tea party book after filling her cup – having a mini-meltdown at the mall after I bought it – but she’s accepted that that’s just the way it is. ๐Ÿ™‚ Now if we could only get her to stop freaking out over that pink ballerina outfit!!

What did you say?!?

What did you say?!?

It’s been a busy learning month for both Allison and Katherine. Allison is starting to use sounds to form words – “ish” and “ada” and now “dada!”

“Ish” indeed refers to “fish” – a plastic fish that she loves to chew on in the tub. And, “dada” seems to refer to both me and Steve. The former came about last week as Patty was giving Katherine a bath. She handed Allison a plastic fish to chew on and repeated “fish” several times. To her and Katherine’s astonishment, Allison started saying “ish” softly and then more loudly. At first, I thought this was a case of Allison learning a sound and practicing it. But…several days ago she saw and started to reach for the fish on the bath counter while saying “ish.”

“dada” came about two days ago. I had been practicing with Allison after hearing “adat” or “adad.” According to a book I’ve been reading (scientist in the crib), first words often consist of “dada,” “mama,” and “tata” (Katherine’s former nickname!). After about a day of me saying “adad, adada, dada,” Allison is now practicing this word. She decided to practice this morning as a matter of fact…at 5AM…while I was changing her diaper! My response was, “Allison: can you please learn how to say mama?”

Katherine is becoming a skilled negotiator. Today she informed me that she hadn’t watched TV or any movies in the morning with Dad, so could I please turn on Elmo in the minivan? She also picks up and uses words without fully realizing their meaning. She told Paulette today, “can I please have some attention?” When Patty asked her if she knew what that meant, she admitted that she didn’t, but she wanted it!

Moving, Moving, Moving

Allison has been rolling around for some time now. The last several days she’s been crawling – backwards, sideways and almost forwards. The motion resembles that of an inchworm. She lifts her backside and legs, positions them underneath her body and pushes with unpredictable direction. When I put my hand behind her feet, she pushes forward. I expect that she’ll be crawling within a couple weeks. Walking will soon follow, since she can now stand and hold onto tables for fairly long periods of time.

Growing

Allison and I took Katherine to her 3 year checkup last Thursday. Funny enough we got to the checkup room and I placed Allison on the checkup table. Her face crumpled and she began to cry – thinking that she was going to be stripped, measured and prodded!

Katherine was very stoic – no crying during her Hep A shot. She also weighed in at 30.2 lbs (50%) and 36.75 inches (50%). This is consistent with past measurements where she’s tended to be 50-75% height and 25% weight.

Allison is FINALLY filling out. We’ve been feeding her organic oatmeal, pears, vegetables this past week three times a day. She ate extremely well today, wolfing down a big portion of cereal and all the vegetables that Patty and I offered her. One key learning is that Allison is a “self-feeder.” Once she starts to fill up, she grabs the spoon and directs it towards her mouth. Good thing we have a washable, nylon cover on the high chair.

I’ll post more pictures later this week.

Every letter makes a sound, the A says ahhh…

Every letter makes a sound, the A says ahhh…

For the last couple months I’ve been working on letter sounds with Katherine. The conversation would go like this…

Christine: “Katherine, what sound does Aaaallison start with?”

Dead Silence

Christine: “It starts with ahhh…Aaaallison starts with ahhh..”

Dead Silence

I was starting to wonder whether Katherine had entered her “sensitive period” for phonemic awareness or not. I was also wondering how long I’d have to have one way conversations…which is pretty unusual with Katherine. Thankfully, we borrowed a great Leapfrog DVD from Audrey two weeks ago which has worked wonders in a very short period of time.

What’s up with the Letter Factory DVD? Well, it uses Leap, Lily, Tad and a Dr. Quigley to sing the entire alphabet and the letter’s sounds. The great news is that Katherine has learned many sounds of the alphabet. If I ask her what sound a letter makes, she can make the correct sound about half the time. When we ask her what sound a word starts with, she can also nail it half the time. The bad news is that this song is stuck in my head and it probably will be for the next few months!

Katherine is also very excited to identify her letters. She can identify half of her letters now…mostly those associated with our names like A for Allison, B for Bisco, D for Daddy, K for Katherine, L for Lambey, M for Mommy, P for Patty, Q for ??, S for Steve, W (upside down M!), X for ?? and Y for who knows!

Yesterday we hit a big milestone as well. Katherine wrote her first letters! She was busy scribbling with her big pencils on some paper. She turned to me and said “Mama, I wrote an A!” I looked casually over and there was an A!! I came home yesterday afternoon to find another piece of paper on the table with several As, an M (or W) and X on it! Needless to say, Steve, Patty and I were very proud of Katherine and she just beamed at us.

Finally eating cereal!

Allison has been working hard to get her hands on some food for a while now. Whenever we hold her at the table, she’ll pull the plate towards her and reach for food. Now she can eat as well…we started rice cereal last Monday and then switched to oatmeal on Friday. Katherine was probably the most excited of any of us. She tried to help by shaking the formula for the cereal, getting the bib and then trying to convince me to let her feed Allison!

Allison has eaten a good meal maybe three or four times over the last week. She’s very strong willed about food and milk, only eating when she is super hungry. This perhaps helps to explain why she is still only 5-10% in weight (13 lbs 0.5 oz) and 50% or 25.5″ in height at her 6 month checkup. Sigh.

Katherine’s birthday
Katherine celebrated her birthday three times last week! The first time was actually on her birthday after Steve and I got home from PuzzleHunt. The second time was at Patty’s sister’s house. The third time was with her friends this past Saturday at an arts and crafts studio in Bellevue.

My mom was a huge help over PuzzleHunt weekend, watching the kids on Sunday until dinner time. Yes….we were solving puzzles for two straight days and didn’t even finish by 5PM when Steve and I had to leave! Anyway, that aside, we got home to find Katherine running around and fired up to open her twelve gifts. She had been planted by the dining room table all day, counting her presents and telling my mom about the chocolate ice cream cake in the freezer. It took her about 10 minutes to rip thru the gifts and then she spent the next hour or so examining games and puzzles from family.

Saturday’s official party was more riotous, with kids running around making dragon masks, butterfly wings, fuse bead artwork and tiled flower pots. Katherine came home with artwork, with lots of help from mom. She also got lots of cool gifts (some to remain in the toy closet for a couple weeks) and had a great time.

Another preschool cold

We’re on our fourth preschool cold this year. Katherine brought it home and promptly gave it to her sister. For the last week, we’ve had runny noses, interrupted sleep (primarily Allison) and some general crankiness. Steve and I are fighting it…fingers crossed we don’t get the full blown cold. As a result of all this interrupted sleep, Allison has been getting up regularly during the night. Steve and I were just exhausted and decided to try formula at night. Allison got up only once last night at midnight to drink formula before waking up at 6AM. We’ll have to try this again. Maybe Allison will decide that formula isn’t worth waking up for and sleep through the night. If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to Ferberize!

Preschool Progress

As you can see, we had a wonderful Harvest Fest right before Halloween this year. I co-chaired the event…learning all about how to manage a preschool project! Anyway, Steve’s parents were able to attend and it was a very special event. Katherine was at first standing in the back of her class until Miss Julie pulled her forward to the stairs. Katherine was a trooper and sang “The Cat came back” and “Earth my body” while mimicking the hand motions of her classmates. It was way too cute.

Last Thursday we had our first student-led parent teacher conference with Miss Tammy. Katherine showed us almost 10 different works from around the classroom in an hour. First she led off with a water project that involved many steps (a) fill the pitcher (b) pour water into bowl (c) use dropper to put soap in bowl (d) use hand mixer to make suds (e) use sponge to wipe mixer (f) pour water into sink. She also showed us how she washes her face in class – which was hysterical – and how she sorts, matches various objects with different works. She’s learning different shapes by feel and stacking the pink cubes in order. She’s learning the basics of counting through 1:1 correspondence. Steve and I had a blast watching Katherine’s progress which Miss Tammy said was phenomenal. (Yes, we’re very proud parents!!) I’ll have to make a point of dropping by the classroom and watching thru the 1 way mirror more often.

First Day of Preschool

First Day of Preschool

I can hardly believe that I’d finally be writing about this…Katherine woke up today at 8AM just in time to eat some cereal, put on her party dress & tights and head off to preschool. Things looked a bit ominous as we walked out the door as she kept saying “Mama, I want you to go to preschool with me.” Her eyes started to tear up and her mouth was downturned looking very sad. During our 10 minute conversation to school, I explained yet again that kids go to school without their parents. I told her that I’d be happy to volunteer and go to school once in a while to help out, but that school was for her to attend by herself. Thankfully the Lady and the Tramp DVD distracted her while we waited for 10 minutes in the car outside the school to drop her off, and I only heard one sad “Mama…” as a teacher lifted her out of her car seat. I shut the minivan door and headed out for my morning errands.

Pickup looked promising. I stood by the playground gate and saw Katherine running across the playground to explore the jungle gym. The teacher finally asked one of the older students in their class to fetch Katherine. He held her hand and led her to the playground gate. Katherine informed me “I only cried a little bit.” This seemed a bit at odds with her teacher’s account “She didn’t cry at all today – just a bit yesterday!” Anyway, I’m knocking on wood and hoping that things stay positive the rest of this week. Katherine is looking for ballerina outfits actively – she found a very nice one at Gymboree that she’s excited about. I’m thinking about a trip to Target on Saturday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Preschool influence is taking effect already. I played with Katherine in her kitchen today. During her conversation with one of her dolls she said “Nice to meet you!” I asked her “Did you learn this at school today?” and she said “Yes. Miss Tammy said that to me!”

The Sanitizer

I strongly suspect that Katherine’s sense of humor comes from her father. A couple days ago I heard Patty tell Katherine about Purell or “hand sanitizer.” For bedtime she scrounged up her Night before Christmas book, looked at it and started talking about “The Sanitizer!!” Yes – she was referring to Santa.

Not Two Peas in a Pod

Steve and I are convinced that the girls don’t look alike. Check out the pictures below.

I should also note that we moved Allison to the Roundabout this weekend. She seems much happier in the car – especially since both kids can see each other in their seats now!

For every action…

We just knew it. Our sleep karma was too good to be true. For the last week or two, Allison has been sleeping 6 hours (once even 7!) before waking up at night. Then she would sleep another 1.5 – 2 hours before waking up again in the morning, followed by a couple hours awake and another 2 – 3 hour nap at 10AM.

The “opposite” reaction started happening 3 days ago when Katherine gave up her afternoon nap. For non-primary caregivers, this may be surprising but not impactful. For those who spend all day with Katherine, this means 12 straight hours of managing very busy and somewhat cranky behavior. I tried several times unsuccessfully last Wednesday to put her down for her nap. This happened again on Thursday, and Friday we didn’t even try. Ironically she fell asleep in her jogger late afternoon on Friday, and then in the car on Saturday – but both days she had a lot of physical exercise.

So, on one hand, we’re lucky and optimistic about Allison’s sleep pattern. On the other hand, I’m a bit bummed to lose the mid-afternoon break with Katherine – at least for now!

Strawberry Season

Katherine and I went to a local patch two Thursdays ago with some friends. We had such a fun time that we decided to do it again last Thursday with the grandparents. (Say what you want about minivans, but we fit all 6 of us in the Odyssey!)

One of the main attractions happens to be a pair of enormous pink rubber boots that we bought for Katherine at Target to take to the patch. Katherine can barely walk in them but insisted on wearing them both times.

Allison went the second time – at first held by me in a Bjorn and then by Grandma Chang. Picking strawberries with Allison in the front pack was kind of like doing squats at the gym. ๐Ÿ™‚ Allison was a total trooper and slept through the whole thing!

We now have several pounds of frozen strawberries and freezer jam for the winter. Katherine loves both. She spent 15-20 minutes tonight eating 4 frozen strawberries. Grandma Chang has been making crepes or “special pancakes” up a storm for Kathering (and me).

Uh…why are you wearing that?

I woke up this morning to find Katherine in her blue swimming floatie vest and a pair of swim diapers, and nothing else! She informed me “I am going swimming!” We had asked her last night if she wanted to go, and she was sooo excited. She even remembered to ask “Can we bring doughnut and bumblebee?” (inflatable toys)

We met Grandma Chang at her clubhouse this morning and spent an hour or so at the pool. Steve followed Katherine as she would walk from one end of the pool to the other, drop in her inflatable doughnut and bob around in the pool. The rest of us (me, my mom and Allison) socialized at the end of the pool. I should say that Allison took this opportunity to take her mid-morning nap.

We headed off to a local teriyaki restaurant afterward to have lunch. Allison had perhaps one of the biggest blowouts ever. I must have spent 10 minutes in the car cleaning her up with wipes, putting her in new clothes while Steve and Katherine ate. While Steve bathed Allison at home, Katherine then managed to have an accident right in the bathroom (happens pretty rarely). Needless to say, it was an eventful morning.

Cooking Class

Katherine is a cooking enthusiast…to the extent she can snack on the ingredients. For instance, she’ll run to the pantry to get oatmeal and brown sugar for cereal and then surreptitiously put her hands in when I’m not looking. (She’ll also open the fridge now for snacks!)

Since many of her activities are winding down this summer (Toddler School & Gymboree), I enrolled her in a mini-chefs class. Katherine was very intrigued, as was I, by the concept of cooking in an old community schoolhouse in downtown Redmond. The first class was a pleasant surprise. The kids made everything from scratch in 45 minutes for strawberry shortcake – Bisquick biscuits, washed and cut strawberries and whipped cream!

She didn’t eat very much at school but insisted on “seeing it” in the fridge and having some for dessert. She didn’t seem to mind that it was a big mushy mess and almost polished it off with help from Dad.

Getting Stronger

Allison is getting much stronger. She can lift her head for extended periods during tummy time and grasp a shirt, finger with her little hands. When she’s really upset, she’ll arch her back and let out some really nice screams!

Unfortunately for the parents she’s still wheezing. While it’s cute during the day, she can get really loud at night and keep us up. Probably the only good news is that she’s learning to sleep through a lot of noise…not only her wheezing but also Katherine’s incessant talking. We’re so looking forward to the soft cartilage issue going away in a month or so…

Lots of people have asked if we think Allison looks like Katherine. If you check out the picture from Katherine at 6 or 7 weeks, it’s pretty clear that she was a bigger child. I think Katherine has a rounder face, but lots of the same facial features. Grandma Chang thinks both girls look like Aunt Sharon.

It’s Mine!

Interestingly enough we don’t hear this very often when Katherine plays with kids her age. But it really surfaces when she’s with younger kids. Last night, she kept taking away toys from a 9 month old “it’s mine!!” At gymnastics, she’s been known to take away toys from a younger baby who comes with her older sibling. What’s amazing is that she understands the concept of sharing and selectively decides who she wants to share with vs. not. Even faced with the prospect of a time-out, she can be very stubborn and hold on to toys for dear life.

Next week will be a big milestone for Katherine. She’ll be attending preschool summer camp with older children in a Montessori environment. I hope we’ve armed her with the basic skills but know that the older children will definitely put her in her place!

Working Out

There are definitely benefits and drawbacks to being a stay at home parent. One benefit is that I can work out more than I did with Katherine. I started running about 3 weeks ago with the realization that I have a long way to go to get back in 20/20 (or pre-children) shape.

Running with Katherine this past Sunday really hit this point home. Somewhat naively, I put Katherine in her blue jogger and set out on my usual run. About half a mile into the run, I was really hating life – pushing a 28 pound child in a jogger that must weigh at least 15 pounds. Needless to say, I will be running sans child for the next couple months. Maybe I’ll try the jogger again then…
