Catching up on Pictures

Catching up on Pictures

It’s getting more time-consuming to review pictures because…the kids have our hand-me-down old Canons. Since last fall they’ve been snapping pictures, and we have winter pictures scattered across four cameras. Here’s a quick summary of the last month or so…

I need an ambulance

I was reading the paper after dinner last night while the kids played in the family room. Here’s the exchange that I heard as they were playing doctor:

A: “Katherine, I need an ambulance”
K: “Why’s that??”
A: “You hurt my feelings”

Katherine is fired up to give Allison or “Al” a tour of Eton tomorrow in advance of the Friday interview. Fingers crossed!

Katherine’s Teeny Violin

Katherine was in a real state yesterday. She was home from school due to holiday and exhausted from the weekend. I took her for a ride to Issaquah with pillow and lambey to pick out her rental violin. It turns out to be a 1/10 size violin, and it barely makes any noise!

C: “I hope you like you’re new violin”
K: “It’s great. I wish the case came in pink…or white…or red though!”

The kids slept like rocks last night and woke in great spirits. Allison slept so soundly she fell off her bed and made a huge “BOOM” sound. We found her on the floor crying. In the morning, Steve found blood all over the sheets from a bloody nose. Poor kid.

What a Day

What a Day

Today was an extraordinarily challenging day, full of experiences for the kids but hair-raising for me and Steve. We started the day off with a visit to the Symphony for Katherine (part of the Discovery music series). Steve took her with some family friends. Apparently, despite some fidgeting, she made it through the hour-long program. Then we came home, rested for an hour and then headed to the Bellevue Aquatic Center. I have to download the pictures from the water, since I think the kids took about 100 pictures… Katherine had a meltdown at the pool; Allison pee-ed on a chair after a trip to the bathroom and then spilt milk at Crossroads. Needless to say, we came home, and the kids went straight to bath and bed.  This was probably the most challenging day in a LONG time.

You hurt my feelings

Allison has picked up so much from Katherine, as evidenced by this conversation:

– Me: “Please get in the car, Allison” (Allison promptly sits in Katherine’s booster seat)
– Me: “Allison, that’s not safe. You need to be bigger to sit in a booster.”
– A: “You hurt my feelings!!”

She’s also started to tell Katherine, “You’re not being nice.”

Katherine, for her part, has started to call Allison “Al.” Funny enough, the nickname sort of fits.

The Holidays

The Holidays

The holidays passed relatively peacefully. We had Christmas Eve dinner at our house with Grandma Chang. We then celebrated Christmas dinner at Aunt Pat and Uncle Art’s house with the extended family.

Our goal for this holiday was to keep a lid on gifts, e.g. not give the kids too much. We sort of accomplished this purpose, although the kids had two towers of presents in the living room. Katherine’s big present was a new 16″ bike that she rides with parental assistance without training wheels. Allison received a dress up chest and jewelry box, just like Katherine, to her delight.

New Family Members

This is why I shop at the toy store by myself for birthday party gifts….Steve and I went to the local toy store over the holidays to buy a gift for Patty’s nephew. At the store, displayed on an end cap, was a bunch of gel ant farms. Steve proclaimed that the kids really needed an ant farm. So, last week the harvester ants arrived. Having watched the Arthur cartoon where he accidentally sets the ants loose, we very carefully read the directions. They said to put the ants in the fridge for 10 minutes to slow them down (really) and then to dump them from the little test tube into the farm. Steve and the kids spent all evening watching the ants running back and forth. After 4 days, the ants have dug a tunnel down to the bottom of the farm and are starting a series of arterial passages.

Basically, our new family members – 20 ants – sleep during the day in their tunnel. Then they wake up in the evening and dig, dig, dig. They carry the gel material in their pincers to the top of the farm where they carefully deposit it in piles. Very cool stuff. I think the adults are more fascinated by this than the kids. ๐Ÿ™‚

Allison’s Developmental Milestones

Allison now sleeps in her big girl bed…backwards with her head facing the headboard. She still gets very squirrelly at night; we’ve told her that if we catch her out of bed that we will turn off one night-light at a time. That seems to work, although I found her sleeping on the floor several nights ago!

Allison is 90% potty trained during the day. Occasional accidents occur in front of the toilet, when she takes too long getting ready to go to the bathroom. Her routine consists of: telling everyone she has to go, running to the toilet, setting her stool by the toilet, pulling down her pants and then climbing on. Then she wrestles with the soap, hot water and towels. She can generally stay dry during her nap, but still needs a diaper at night.

Allison’s lack of height continues to present challenges for her. We’ve recently renamed “Katherine’s old bike” to “Allison’s new bike.” Allison was so excited to sit on the little 12″ wheel Trek bike with the seat post all the way down. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the leverage yet to move the pedals with her feet. So, she’ll move them a couple of rotatons and then cry, “please push me, I want to go with Katherine!!”

Allison has her preschool interview next Friday. Fingers crossed it goes well!

Katherine’s Milestones

Katherine is progressing nicely with her reading these days. She has started to read “Green Eggs and Ham” and can get through a lot of Dick and Jane stories as well. Her (and Allison’s) favorite D&J story is “Dick and Jane – a Christmas Story.” They’ve both memorized the words (Katherine can read them) and pretend to eat the beautiful cookies in the book. A couple of nights ago, Katherine read from her D&J Friends book as Allison read aloud from the Christmas story.

Katherine talks a lot about school these days. She tells us stories about the animal years, who did what to whom, and lessons from the teachers. Katherine is convinced, despite my arguments, that she was born during the year of the Ram. She wants to be a Ram, just like Dad. One of her papers came home the other day titled, “I wus a ram.” I see a lot of sentences, numeral and arithmetic works come home. She writes sentences phonetically which means that they require some deciphering.

Katherine also does pretend play at home with Allison. Tonight they pretended that they were in a fire drill at school, running all through the house. They pretend to give each other checkups; Katherine will hold a clipboard and ask Allison, “how are you feeling today?” And, they make up games like “Daddy Space Monster” which is just an excuse for the family to run around the house and scream.

Despite this progress, funny things pop out of her mouth. A couple of days ago, Allison said that she wanted to play with her ball. She said, “I want to play Bollyball.” I assumed this came from Katherine and asked her, “What do you play at school? Bollyball or Volleyball?” She told me very seriously, “Bollyball!”

Skate King

As part of our Eton Together fundraising and community building, a couple moms on our parent team organized a family field trip to Skate King. Skate King is a rather dingy but very popular indoor skating rink in Bellevue, targeting the 6+ age range. This event was really for lower elementary kids, but I decided that Katherine and I would check it out and take pictures. Katherine was sooo excited and made me promise that I would consider letting her skate. The conditions were that the skates had to be reasonably safe for her age and skates were available in her size. Lo and behold, she lucked out, and I rented both of us skates.

It was a wild experience, being on skates myself (not an issue) and holding up Katherine on skates (a real issue). I then figured out that I could wear my shoes if we were next to the rail. So, we made another couple of laps around the rink, with Katherine clutching everything in sight. By the end of 90 minutes, she could skate holding onto the railing (not me). Plus we had played a game called sock, where they turn on/off lights to indicate who should leave the ice. Katherine and I were ironically still on the ice at the end, which meant we won candy. That sealed the deal for Katherine. She asked me on the way out, “can we come back here next month?” When I asked her what she really enjoyed she said, “everything!!”

A Crazy 6 Weeks…

A Crazy 6 Weeks…

It’s been a crazy November and December with birthdays, family visits and various crises happening. After the big push around Steve’s and Katherine’s birthdays and Halloween, we then had Thanksgiving. Steve’s Mom broke a hip, and then we had my birthday. I also played my first gig in…only 15 years! And, we had a couple community events at Eton to attend. What else could possibly happen? ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m going to post a bunch of pictures to catch up and just summarize our big developmental milestones.

I go poop I get chocolate!!

Yes. It’s that time again. It’s potty training time, and Allison is done! We started in November and are pretty much done with the occasional incident. In all, it took 2-3 weeks. Chocolate from Grandma Chang was the big incentive. Not only did Allison get a Hershey’s kiss, but Katherine also every time Allison went potty the first couple weeks. Needless to say, Katherine was a big cheerleader.

Tie Shoes and Growing

Katherine has been on a massive growth streak. She now comes up to my bicep – a full 3′ 6″ tall and close to 40 pounds. As part of this, she needed a new pair of sneakers at Thanksgiving, and we went to Stride Rite to get them. By Monday or Tuesday of the following week, she announced and demonstrated how she could tie her shoes! I guess a bunch of 2nd and 3rd years wear tie shoes, and one or two them taught Katherine how to do it. She also practiced (I believe in Practical Life) at school. Now she ties her shoes and Allison’s tie sneakers. Allison won’t wear her expensive Velcro Nike sneakers anymore; she wants to wear Katherine’s old hand-me-down New Balance sneakers with tie laces.

The 12″ Wheels

The neighbors must think it the funniest thing to see Katherine pedaling around on her little pink bike. It truly is too small for her, being the smallest size bike available (12″ wheels). She’s told Steve that she wants a bigger bike, but she doesn’t think Santa can fit it down the chimney. Little does she know that I have a new 16″ pink bike from REI smuggled away in my mom’s garage for Christmas morning. Anyway, Katherine can now ride…without training wheels. This happened last week after the last day of school. She convinced Steve to take the training wheels off. The next think I knew, Steve was running down the street after her, while she pedaled by herself into the driveway!!

Allison’s Development

There is nothing this child will not try, a true testament to her desire to keep up with Katherine:

– She tries furiously to pedal her trike, but she’s still a bit too short. After a couple revolutions, she’ll turn to me and say, “push me, push me, I want to go with Katherine!!”

– She now works easily on 24 piece puzzles, the little ones that you get at the drug store for $3. ๐Ÿ™‚ She occasionally needs help with one or two pieces. She can breeze thru the big US Map without any issues and remember the names of her favorite states.

– She wants to do everything herself. If she can’t reach something, she’ll lug around a big wooden stool. I’ve even caught her putting the little rubber stool on top of the wooden stool for greater reach. Upon intervention, she’ll holler and cry for a few minutes and then set upon her next project.

– Steve put together the junior bed, which the kids played with for a bit. Allison decided that she wanted to sleep on the big bed though. The junior bed is now in our “get rid of” pile awaiting the right opportunity. Allison has tried to sleepover in Katherine’s bed a few nights. That only lasts 30 minutes until Katherine kicks her out of bed, “Mom, she makes so much noise. I can’t sleep!!”

Katherine’s 5th Birthday Party

Katherine’s Party

Part one of Katherine’s fifth birthday occurred this morning. We took the girls to Pump it Up where a bunch of kids from class and a couple little friends stopped by for bouncing. We have many pictures to slog through, but I picked just a couple representative pictures for now.

When I asked Katherine what was her favorite part, she replied, “the whole thing…I loved the whole thing.” This referred to a full hour of bouncing, pizza, juice boxes, a butterfly cupcake cake and balloons. Katherine was excited to show Allison how to bounce and even took her to the water fountain several times for drinks. Allison did end up with a very wet shirt, but loved playing with the big kids.

I think many of her friends had told their parents what Katherine loves now: arts and crafts. Katherine spent the whole day lugging all her gifts around the house and trying out different parts of each arts and crafts kit. She even gave up stories tonight to color in a velvet picture. What else? She toted around a Lego ambulance that she constructed almost by herself! And, she spent a good half an hour playing with a Calico Corner dollkit which matches Allison’s house nicely.

All in all, it was a fun but exhausting day.

This is “Baking Soda”

I often have these surreal moments when I know that Allison is trying to say something, but it’s not coming out right. This afternoon we played with a USA puzzle, one that has say 12 pieces instead of 50. As she worked, Allison muttered to herself, “these are the lines…this is the boot (e.g. Louisana)…this goes here…and this is baking soda.” At that, I had to interrupt and ask, “what is baking soda?” She pointed to a state and repeated herself. Thinking hard, I finally figured it out, “You mean …Minnesota!” Allison then replied, “OK…OK…it’s Minnesota” The wierdest thing about this is that I hadn’t told her this, so this must be from Mom and/or Patty.
