Cisco Completes Acquisition of Pure Networks

Cisco Completes Acquisition of Pure Networks
Today, Cisco completed its acquisition of Pure Networks. The press release on the definitive agreement can be found here.

I started Pure Networks in July, 2002 right before Katherine was born in November. In the same year, I started a company and had my first child. It was quite a balancing act as I felt passionate about both endeavors. At Pure, I had the opportunity to work with some great people and companies. I learned a lot about building companies and investing in people and relationships. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
It’s hard to believe this chapter is my life is over. I turned 40 last October and I think I have at least one more startup in me after the kids get involved with school full time.

I’m currently working in Microsoft Research as a Software Development Engineer for Susan Dumais. I’m having a great time writing code and learning about search related technologies so I have no immediate plans to do something else.

Cisco Acquires Pure Networks

Cisco Acquires Pure Networks

This was quite an eventful week for the BushChang Family.  Today, Cisco announced that it was acquiring Pure Networks for $120 million.  Pure Networks is the company Steve co-founded in 2002.  This is a great exit for Steve, the Pure Networks team and Pure’s investors.  Linksys/Cisco is a good technology match for Pure and the Pure team will remain in Seattle.

Snows Days…

7 Days of School

It’s a wonder I have any hair left on my head at all. I think I might have pulled it all out the last several weeks. Why? We’ve had only SEVEN days of school since December 14th. Between holidays and at least 5 snow days, our school routine is almost non-existent. This has resulted in very squirrely behavior of late, which I seriously hope dissipates as we get back into our school routine. Today was Katherine’s first day back at school in a week, and she had a hard time getting back into the swing of things.

Katherine Bush

Allison loves to say her sister’s name. A few weeks ago, Katherine told us that she wanted to nap in the minivan on the way to the Museum of Flight. No sooner did we leave the driveway did Allison start in…”Kathrine…Kafrine…Kathrine…” On and on this went. Finally, Katherine complained, “I can’t sleep because Allison keeps saying my name.” Now this has progressed. Allison runs around saying “Katherine Bush!!!” She’s so proud that she can say her sister’s first and last name.

Holiday Pictures

I’m not sure if we’ve uploaded all the Christmas pictures yet, but this is a sampling. My favorite picture of the kids is the one in front of the Molbak’s Poinsettia tree. They had just mowed down a scone and milk and were in good spirits. My other favorite is of Allison stacking crayons, because this gives you a good idea of how she plays. She’s very deliberate and concentrated in her efforts. She’s since moved on to stacking wooden blocks – counting as she stacks her cylindrical blocks higher and higher until they fall!

More Changes

Steve is back at work. After 6 years away, he’s back at Microsoft…but this time in Research. It’s only been 2 years and 2 months since I left, but it seems the company sure has changed a lot. Of course, if we think back to when we started years ago, the change is even more marked. But, all that said, I’m looking forward to the routine. Katherine is going thru the adjustment of not spending as much time with Steve, but I think she’ll be fine in a couple weeks (fingers crossed, knock on wood).

Finally Pictures!!

Finally Pictures!!

Steve downloaded all of our pictures, so here they are. My favorite is the one of Allison after her bath with lots of curls and a big smile for Dad. The picture of her with an O on her eye is pretty funny too.

Allison is developing so much every day. She not only stands for minutes at a time, but she can also cruise long distances. We often put her next to her little table, which is next to the family room recliner. In only a minute or so, she will cruise past her table, the recliner and over to the side table next to the couch. We also can’t leave anything on the coffee table, because she will walk around the entire table to reach what she wants. Speaking of which, what she really wants are cords, preferably power cords. Steve has tied all the cords up and put them out of reach. Not deterred, Allison will army crawl under the tables to reach the cords…only to have us pull her out or pick her up before she can reach them.

Allison is still a skinny bean. She’s eating more these days because of her walking – yogurt, vegetables, toast, cereal, little bits of cheese, teething biscuits. We’re also brushing all four of her teeth before bed to avoid cavities.

Katherine has had some fun parties and experiences the last couple weeks. As you can see, Katherine attended a birthday party for a little friend at a local ballet studio. In lieu of her pink leotard, Katherine insisted on wearing her gymnastics leotard and refused to wear tights. Since seeing her friends decked out in pink, Katherine now runs around the house in pink tights over her Strawberry Shortcake leotard.

100 Day Party

One of Katherine’s more memorable experiences at school was her 100 day party. I had a commitment that morning, but thankfully Steve could attend. It turned out that just about every child had a parent attend the party. This consisted of each child bringing 100 objects to school. In Katherine’s case, we put 100 Duplos in a big Tupperware that morning and told her that Dad would be attending the party later. She was so excited at dropoff exclaiming, “My Dad is coming to the party today!” as she carried her big Tupperware off to class.

Taking a Break

Steve started his “break” last Thursday. To surprise Dad and celebrate this occasion, Katherine and I baked some screaming chocolate and vanilla cupcakes from scratch. They were delicious. Katherine waited very patiently for Steve to get home around 7PM before digging into her little mini chocolate cupcake. ๐Ÿ™‚

I explained to Katherine that Dad wouldn’t be working in Seattle anymore. She hasn’t totally internalized this yet, especially since this past week has been mid-winter break and she’s been at home. Once we get back into our normal routine this Monday with school, I’m sure she’ll figure out that Dad’s going to be around a lot more than he used to be.
