First Day of Preschool

First Day of Preschool

I can hardly believe that I’d finally be writing about this…Katherine woke up today at 8AM just in time to eat some cereal, put on her party dress & tights and head off to preschool. Things looked a bit ominous as we walked out the door as she kept saying “Mama, I want you to go to preschool with me.” Her eyes started to tear up and her mouth was downturned looking very sad. During our 10 minute conversation to school, I explained yet again that kids go to school without their parents. I told her that I’d be happy to volunteer and go to school once in a while to help out, but that school was for her to attend by herself. Thankfully the Lady and the Tramp DVD distracted her while we waited for 10 minutes in the car outside the school to drop her off, and I only heard one sad “Mama…” as a teacher lifted her out of her car seat. I shut the minivan door and headed out for my morning errands.

Pickup looked promising. I stood by the playground gate and saw Katherine running across the playground to explore the jungle gym. The teacher finally asked one of the older students in their class to fetch Katherine. He held her hand and led her to the playground gate. Katherine informed me “I only cried a little bit.” This seemed a bit at odds with her teacher’s account “She didn’t cry at all today – just a bit yesterday!” Anyway, I’m knocking on wood and hoping that things stay positive the rest of this week. Katherine is looking for ballerina outfits actively – she found a very nice one at Gymboree that she’s excited about. I’m thinking about a trip to Target on Saturday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Preschool influence is taking effect already. I played with Katherine in her kitchen today. During her conversation with one of her dolls she said “Nice to meet you!” I asked her “Did you learn this at school today?” and she said “Yes. Miss Tammy said that to me!”

The Sanitizer

I strongly suspect that Katherine’s sense of humor comes from her father. A couple days ago I heard Patty tell Katherine about Purell or “hand sanitizer.” For bedtime she scrounged up her Night before Christmas book, looked at it and started talking about “The Sanitizer!!” Yes – she was referring to Santa.

Not Two Peas in a Pod

Steve and I are convinced that the girls don’t look alike. Check out the pictures below.

I should also note that we moved Allison to the Roundabout this weekend. She seems much happier in the car – especially since both kids can see each other in their seats now!

Preschool Orientation

Katherine, Steve and I headed to Montessori Children’s House this morning for preschool orientation. Like summer camp, Katherine kept saying this morning “I don’t want to go to preschool.” We convinced her to get into the fast car. But upon arriving at school, Steve informed me “we’ve got meltdown!” Katherine had a teary face as we approached her new teacher and classroom. I promised her that we would get a treat, a very small ice cream cone, after her orientation. This seemed to appease her, and the teacher assured us that she would get us if Katherine didn’t calm down soon.

As we sat thru orientation we could hear a couple children screaming bloody murder nearby “Mamaaaa, Daddaaa” Steve kept saying “that’s not Katherine, right?!!” Funny enough the teachers said that crying due to separation anxiety subsides after 5-10 minutes – as the child continued to scream at the top of his lungs 30 minutes into the orientation. ๐Ÿ™‚

We approached the playground gate to pickup Katherine. She came running up with a bunch of other children and informed me “Mama, Mama, I cried only a little bit!!” She insisted as we headed home that we get our special treat today and that we shouldn’t wait for Dad tomorrow. We then spent the next hour getting a new pair of school shoes and a small chocolate ice cream cone with sprinkles at the local mall. As we talked, we had a conversation like this…

Christine: “Katherine, if you’re a good girl at preschool next week and listen to mommy, we can get you a costume next week for Audrey’s princess birthday party.” (Kids are supposed to dress up for the party.)

Katherine: “i want to get a ballerina costume!” (I have no idea where this came from. How did she hear about ballerinas?)

After polishing off our cone, we headed over to a toy store to check out costumes. Katherine riffled thru a rack and pulled out a pink leotard with feathers and sequins (ack!)

Katherine: “I want this dress!” (with a dual death grip on the hanger)

Christine: “Katherine, remember we’re going to buy this next week!”

Katherine: “We buy this NOW. We put this away with my swim suit in closet and get out next week!” (Yeah, right)

Christine: “Katherine, please let go. We’re not going to buy this now!” (Prying her little hands off the hanger).

This culminated in me carrying Katherine out of the store and assuring her that the store would NOT run out of ballerina / princess outfits next week. I told Steve what happened, and he was very proud of her ingenuity. Go figure.

A Very Placid Baby

Allison continues to be a very placid, happy baby. Yesterday we had four children over for a playdate. Amid massive screaming Allison hung out on my shoulder and was very calm. I put her in her crib for her late morning nap and checked in 10 minutes later to find her squirming around but making no noise. I then popped her in her swing and she slept for 1.5 hours. She’s a total trooper.

Our bottle training has paid off. Kudos to Patty, Steve and my Mom for enduring a couple weeks of screaming then crying before daily bottles. Amazingly enough, my Mom gave Allison a bottle yesterday, as I sat 2 yards away, and she gulped it all down. Patty is now taking care of both girls, taking them for walks in the Chariot, and feeding Allison bottles as I run errands and get out of the house. It definitely feels like we’re in the next phase of babyhood where it just gets easier and easier.

Second to Last in Line

For those of you familiar with the Game, Steve and I played this week with 3 friends from Madera – my freshman dorm. The net is that we got smoked by a bunch of fast teams, but had a great time hanging out. One major epiphany came as Steve lined up by age with perhaps 10 or so other gamers for a pre-game exercise. He was second to last and second oldest in line barely. Yes – we’re getting pretty old for this game stuff. This was reinforced a couple days ago when our 15 year reunion class book arrived. Can you believe it’s been 15 years since we graduated??!

Playing this time was a bit hairy with the kids but we did it. Patty agreed to watch the kids and bring them to Bellingham for our opening ceremony and first evening. Then she would bring Allison to a couple meals on Saturday for feeding. I pumped other times during the weekend. We got some really interesting looks as we hung in the lobby the first afternoon with the kids and ate dinner with them before the evening festivities.

The irony of this Game is that I had been running 3-4 times a week for 10 weeks to get in shape for this event. My one key physical moment? I had to do the limbo the last morning. My back is still protesting. ๐Ÿ™‚

The good news – The garage bay for the mini-van is almost clean. You can now walk thru the den without stepping on anything. And, we’ve returned just about everything to where it needs to go.

We just need to get thru our first week of pre-school and Labor Day and the summer will officially be over. In some ways, it’ll be a bummer not to have the flexibility of summer. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to having a more structured day for Katherine and having her learn social and academic lessons at school.

I’ll post more news early next week as our pre-school adventures unfold.

Bush / Vasvary Family Visit

Steve’s grandparents are visiting this week. Katherine has been busy entertaining them with Allison observing. Tonight we hosted them at our home. Katherine appeared downstairs in her bathing suit after asking “Mommy, you wash my bathing suit?!” She then dragged her sand toys and aqua shoes to the deck and pretended to serve sand as a dinner. Hm.

Staying Dry at Night!

Katherine has now stayed dry in her underwear at night several times. We’ve held out incentives like ice cream (only the first few times) and a Push-up pop at Grandma’s house. We just need to make sure that she goes to the bathroom before bed, and she’s all set!

What DID you do?

We’ve told Katherine numerous times not to lift her sister. What did she do last night? While I was picking up after dinner, Katherine tried to lift her sister who was playing on her mat and ended up hitting her on her head. All of a sudden I heard Allison wailing and found Katherine looking somewhat remorseful next to her. The next few minutes were tough for everyone. Allison took a few minutes to calm down and Katherine ended up in her room. We all learned a hard lesson last night…

More Berry Picking

Unlike last year, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about driving an hour to North Bend to pick blueberries. Instead we visited a small farm in Duvall only 20-25 minutes away. We picked the type of blueberries you’d find in the supermarket – not the big juicy ones that we got last year. Our yield – 7.5 lbs of berries. This wasn’t too bad considering Katherine poured some of our berries into her bucket and ate / dropped them on the ground. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thankfully we were able to leave Allison with Patty given the intense heat and overgrown bushes that we tromped through.

Chasing Waves at Cannon Beach

Our family visited Cannon Beach this past week. Katherine and Steve “chased waves” and flew their kites. I spent most of my time getting sand out of Allison’s hair and clothes. ๐Ÿ™‚

The trip to and from Cannon Beach was uneventful with Katherine watching several movies in the car. True to tradition, we stopped at McDonalds for a couple meals – only happens once every several years.

What else? Katherine played with her friends digging in muddy sand and running through the waves. On our last day, she and Steve explored the tide pools. We bought firewood and s’mores package from the resort and stayed up until 9PM roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Allison was a total trooper, snoozing under umbrellas on the beach and getting sandy every time a child would play too close to her or the wind would blow under the umbrella.

Getting bigger and growing up

Allison is growing up so quickly. She spends 10 or 15 minutes at a time on her mat batting her toys. She also is content to lay on her tummy, occasionally raising her head or legs. With some assistance, Allison can rock herself and flip onto her belly.

Last night she slept 9.5 hours – what a trooper! I woke up at 4AM to see her rustle, wave her hand around, finally get her thumb in her mouth and fall back into a deep sleep.

Putting Allison down for naps is getting easier. Whereas she would have previously woken up and cried, now she can console herself with her thumb. It’s a wonderful thing.

Just like her older sister…

Just like her older sister…

Allison is following in her older sister’s foot, or sleep, steps. At 12 weeks exactly (the night before I went back to work), Katherine officially slept through the night. Two nights ago, at 11.5 weeks, Allison slept a whopping 9 hours! I walked in at 6 hours expecting to see her awake, then checked in on her at 7 and 8 hours. She kept snoozing and finally gave a big stretch and yawn at 9 hours. Ironically I didn’t get a very good night sleep. Bisco had an irritated ear from allergies and woke Steve and I up at 4AM.

Last night Allison slept 7.5 hours, from 9:40 to 5AM. I was so proud and so got a 6 hour stretch of sleep before waking up for good. Her sleep schedule is pretty well set. She drops off to sleep between 9:20 and 10PM – about an hour after Katherine goes to bed and while we watch the Tour de France. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have my fingers crossed that this isn’t just a growth spurt thing.

No pictures today…I’ll update with some later this week.

2 Month Checkup & 4 Shots!

Allison has been growing up a storm. She measured 22″ (0.5″ growth) and 9.5 lbs (over 1.5 lbs increase). She’s a bit shorter than Katherine at 2 months – at 50% height and 25% weight. Her pediatrician looked her over and pronounced her in great health. We’re still waiting for her chirping, wheezing to go away entirely. Mom and Patty think that it’s letting up and less severe, but I really can’t tell anymore.

The toughest part of the checkup were the 2 shots in each leg and the aftereffects. That evening, before Steve arrived home, Allison just melted down for 30 minutes crying and crying. The next day she urped once with my mom, another time in the afternoon and then once more after her bath. Yes – vomiting is a side effect of the vaccinations. ๐Ÿ™‚ She also melted down for another half an hour that afternoon at a friends home. I’m so glad that vaccinations are over for the next several months.

Summer Camp

The fourth of July was eventful. Aunt Sharon and Uncle Jamey came to visit from Boston. Katherine was sooo excited. She took them to the Museum of Flight and raspberry picking. They showed Katherine how to make yummy pies.

The most apprehensive part of the weekend was….summer camp! Katherine headed off to 4 days of Montessori preschool just down the hill. As she put it, “I only cried a little bit.” Despite our description of preschool, she was under the impression that I would stay at school with her. The first day I walked her down to the little classroom and watched as the teacher told Katherine where to find the bathroom, the snack table and the pets. A few minutes later, when the teacher was showing Katherine one of the tanks, I gave Katherine a kiss and told her that I’d be back soon. Apparently she cried a few times that morning because she wanted me to play with her there. As I pulled up to pick her up I saw the children hold hands, cross the little walkway two by two to the gated playground. Poor Katherine had a tear stained face and was first in line with an older girl. I arrived at the gate to find Katherine standing a few feet away “Mommy!!” On the way home she told me “boy told me to go away. I covered my eyes with my hands and cried.” I asked the teacher about this the next day to find out if there were sharing issues to learn that Katherine had been watching the children work on their projects – and that not all were comfortable with that. This was a great opportunity to teach Katherine a coping skill although it was too bad to see her sad about this experience.

Thankfully, Katherine still wanted to go to school the next few days – with a few tears here and there during the morning. The last day she clung to me, and the teacher had to carry her crying down the stairs to the classroom. I talked to the teacher afterwards who said that she needed to work on putting things away, but did extremely well given that she never had been in daycare and that she had no accidents during the week! Needless to say we’re working on consistently putting project materials and toys away.

Picking Fruit

It’s been a great summer for picking fruit. After our first strawberry adventure, the girls and I took the grandparents strawberry picking. Then, over the Fourth weekend, the entire Chang family went raspberry picking at Remlinger Farms. Allison stayed in her car seat with a blanket hanging over it for shade as she sat below the bushes. Katherine ran up and down each row, picking raspberries, putting them in her little cardboard box. Occasionally she would drop her box of fruit and we’d hear her loudly exclaim “Oh no…I dropped my berries!” After filling a box, she’d find Jamey and dump them into one of two cardboard boxes. The raspberries tasted GREAT, and I made some pretty tasty freezer jam. We had enough left over to freeze at least 5 or 6 pounds of fresh fruit.

Learning to Swim

Katherine is now a regular at the community center pool where my mom lives. She’s learning with Patty how to blow bubbles and kick in the water. The pool is zero entry which means that she can run into the “small pool” and then splash around. Typically she’ll then get out and demand to go into the “big pool.” Our goal is for her to be a lot more comfortable in the water – hopefully we’ll get there by the end of the summer!
