What a good patient

Katherine was a very good patient this weekend. She and Steve both came down with a 24 hour stomach flu. They woke up early Saturday morning, Katherine with a blowout and throwing up. Steve cleaned her up and put her back to bed. Later that morning, after a breakfast of blueberries, she threw up again – thankfully close to the bathroom sink. We limited intake to diluted Gatorade and popsicles, and she threw up a few more times although mostly just liquid that day. The good news is that Katherine was a very stoic sick toddler. Apart from crying hard after throwing up, she was very sedate and not very whiny. She liked to be held. I must have held her at least 10 minutes at a stretch several times in my arms. That hasn’t happened in months.

Vocabulary

Katherine has been learning lots of words these days. She said “toast” this morning as I was toasting her bread for breakfast. She regularly says “agua” or “wawa” for water and “ishe” for ice cubes. She asks for “jush” or “juice” regularly and really understands how things work. For instance, she has this halloween straw that has been in her drawer. Well, she pulled it out today and a cup – waved the cup at me and said “agua.” After I filled it, she motioned to the ice maker and then juice, as if to say “juice and ice please.” Then, after this, she then drank her juice out of her straw.

Her memory is really amazing. She regularly hits the kumquat at the supermarket, running to get one and then put it the shopping basket. She also got very excited as she saw that I was picking up juice at the supermarket, “abble jush.”

It was a real bummer to spend the weekend sick. I’m hoping we can take a couple of weeks off this summer to hang with Katherine and have some real quality time.
