Katherine Wants Attention

Katherine is getting more alert every day. She has long periods where she’s awake and doesn’t know what to do with herself. Most of the time she wants to be held. The good news is that she’s sleeping four hours at a stretch. This means that Christine and I only need to get up twice during the night. The bad news is that it takes her longer to fall back asleep. Katherine wants attention.

Today, Katherine and mom puttered around the house. Katherine got a quick sponge bath this evening as we’re trying to set up some bedtime rituals for her. We heard from our Pediatrician and read in a book called Touchpoints that bedtime rituals are good toward getting your child to have regular sleep patterns. At this point, we’ll try anything to get Katherine to sleep regularly. Overall, she’s a good baby so we have little to complain about.

Tomorrow, we meet with the nanny agency to try to find a great nanny for Katherine.

PHP Content Management Systems

Content Management (cont). I’ve been looking at different PHP based content management systems. One interesting metaphor is a scrapbook: http://craftysyntax.com/myscrapbook/. Novice users can associate the chapters and pages as containing “grouped content”. While I think this is an interesting idea, I think over time people would find it too cute. It’s a lot like Microsoft Bob. Bob usability tested well and users felt it was “easy” to understand and use. However, over days of usage people found Bob to be annoying and the “ease of use” features that helped them get started were now in the way of getting stuff done.

So, how do you make content management “easy” for users? My view is that you need to use the file system. Users have been socialized that the file system is a place where you “save”, “launch”, “view”, “copy”, “cut”, “paste”, “properties”, and “look” for items. Users understand these concepts from years of interacting with the file system.

What are the key concepts for “dynamic web pages”?

  • Rendering. Rendering is the process of combining code, content, and user properties into HTML which is rendered by a web browser like Internet Explorer. Rendering can happen on the server, client, or a combination of both. There are advantages and disadvantages to each approach. The key advantage of server rendering is that server applications (databases, authentication, content mgmt) can be used by the web server to render HTML tailored to a specific user. The key disadvantage is that the web server does all of the processing which results in having to purchase more servers as your computation or user base increases. The key advantages of client rendering are that all of the processing occurs on the client, the client can easily aggregrate content from multiple web sites, and the client can take advantage of applications running locally. The key disadvantages are browser capability between platforms and vendors and reliance on “web services” (more on this later). The final rendering is compilation. Compilation is where you take a template and compile or transform it into HTML. Fields or variables in the template are combined with data to create custom versions of a template for a particular category, topic, or page. Think of it as mail merge. The right solution is a combination of client, server, and compilation with templates.
  • Editing. Editing is a familar term to most users expect editing in HTML is really programming. You’re in charge of writing text that controls the presentation and content. Early word processors marked up documents this way until Microsoft Word and others hid the formatting commands from the user (WYSIWG). Unfortunately, HTML isn’t a very friendly language to edit in. Tags like <TABLE BORDER=1 CELLPADDING=0 CELLSPACING=0><TR><TD VALIGN=TOP> are required to create a table. There are some good HTML editors out there but generally, users need to understand the underlying HTML to coerce the presentation to the right thing. Tricks like &nbsp;<BR> to force a non-empty table cell are common practice. HTML is content, layout, and presentation. Different sections of a web page require specialized editing tools.
  • Publishing. The web equivalent of saving and distribution via email is publishing. You publish a web site from a local staging location to the live web site. This means you most likely have two copies of your web site. One you’re editing and one that is “published” or publicly viewable. Most web pages are edited locally and published to a web server in the cloud. FrontPage, Homesite and other web publishing programs have a rich Win32 client that edits and maintains a local copy of the web site. A user can then publish the web site to their public server via FTP or FrontPage Server extensions.
  • Database. Most web pages are tailored with content or to a specific user. Users who want to create “dynamic web” pages need to understand databases because this is where all customization data is stored. Think of this as the data for a mail merge (rendering). Most databases are based on SQL which is a rich and powerful structured query language.

In sum, creating a dynamic web page isn’t as simple as writing a memo or piece of email. It’s programming. Users need to understand a lot of computer science concepts and how they interact to build a dynamic web page. The trick is how to make most of this transparent to the user while giving them the rich functionality, flexibility and individuality of statement this require.

More on this topic later this week…

Christine and Katherine Visit Bellevue Square

Christine and Katherine spent the morning together running errands while dad was at work. They met Suzi LeVine and Sidney at Bellevue Square and did some shopping. Katherine loves getting out and about and feeling snug in her car seat.

After dinner, Katherine had trouble getting to sleep. She was too tired and fussy to fall asleep. Christine and I tried all of the tricks: holding her, rocker, vibrating chair. None seemed to work. Christine ended up just holding her in the rocker until they both fell asleep. Dad thinks they look extremely cute ๐Ÿ™‚

Brunch with the Tsengs

Another busy day in the BushChang Household. We started off the morning with brunch at the home of Larry and Sue Tseng. With three kids running around, Christine and I got a good taste of what our future holds for us.

Katherine is growing like a weed. Today, Christine and I noticed that she is becoming very aware of herself, hands, and legs. We bought her a mirror which she just loves. She watches herself in the mirror and smiles. She also has started sucking on her hand and consciously placing in in her mouth. It’s very interesting as parents as we’re noticing she’s become more aware of her surroundings. Loud noises used to not bother her but they do now if she’s not in a deep sleep.

We’re also learning the cues she gives us. There is a definite cry for a wet diaper and another cry for I’m too tired to fall asleep without you holding me for a while. She’s also starting to show personality and have more wake periods between feedings. She’s starting to get more interesting…

Cleaning Up The House

The BushChang family had an eventful day. In the morning, we cleaned out the exercise room closet and put most of it into boxes for storage in the garage. The next task is to tackle the entertainment room closet and repeat the process. Finally, clean up the garage and the house is all back together again after the remodeling work we did.

Katherine met our hair stylist Amy today. Everyone at Gary Manuel Salon oohed and awed at Katherine. At four weeks and sleeping peacefully, Katherine put on a good show. After a couple of stops (Target, Fred Meyer, and Home Depot) we got the storage containers we needed to clean out the closet upstairs.

After a brief period at home, the BushChang family crossed the bridge to visit the LeVine family. Suzi wanted to attend the Expedia holiday party so we offered to babysit Sidney. The good news is that Sidney slept the whole time (we caught a few hours ourselves).

On the Katherine front, dad saw her put her hand into her mouth as part of her “feeding cues”. She smiled when she did it too ๐Ÿ™‚

Late Night Katherine Feeding

It’s 2A and Katherine wants to be fed. Dad decides not to wake up mom and try to bottle feed Katherine. Katherine is a champ eater. She sucks down 3 of the 4ozs of bottled breast milk in 5 minutes. The remaining ounce takes a while but she eventually finishes. Now, it’s time to change her (again) and try to convince her to go to sleep. Dad’s tired but cannot sleep because Katherine’s grunting. Finally, dad decides to hold Katherine in the rocking chair for 1/2 hour until she falls fast asleep. It’s now 3:30A.

5:30A. Katherine’s hungry again and dad decides to get mom out of bed. This is the longest strength of time Christine has been able to sleep since Katherine was born. Christine and Katherine have learned to be efficient so by 6:30A Christine and Katherine are both back in bed. Dad’s too tired to sleep…

7:06A. Dad decides to catch a few winks of sleep before the sun comes up.
