Grandparents Arrive for the Holidays

The grandpa and grandma Bush arrived for the Christmas holidays on Saturday. Their first stop was to get some Katherine time. Here are some pictures of them holding Katherine.

On Sunday night, my parents watched Katherine while Christine and I got a full night of sleep. We cannot remember the last time we got a full eight hours of sleep, probably not since Katherine was born.

Today, Sharon, Jamey, and Agnes arrive from the east coast. Our plan is to spend Christmas eve with the Changs and prepare for everyone coming over on Christmas for dinner.

Rushing to Publish

Before midnight weblog rush.  It seems like I’m also writing my weblogs at a couple of minutes before midnight.  My latest trick is to post an bogus weblog before midnight so I can “set the clock” on the weblog even though I usually finish it after midnight.

Publishing Photos.  I’m trying to take more digital photos of Katherine and incorporate them into her weblog.  In addition to being a home networking and computer geek, I’m also a photo geek.  I currently shoot with a Nikon F5 for film and Nikon 990 for digital.  During my sabbatical, I wrote a photo manager program that associates the “shooting data” of the camera with the actual photos.  I did this because there is really no good solution for a photo processing workflow that works with both digital and regular photos.  All of the existing solutions are either really high end (too expensive) or focused on just digital.

What I want is a way to take digital or regular photos and easily massage them into my existing web content.  I created a template for Katherine’s web log that I reuse over and over again to generate a thumbnail view that when clicked upon goes to a higher res version.  This should all be automatic.

Trying to Get Katherine to be Regular

Christine and I are trying to get Katherine into a routine. We’ve read and hear from friends that regular sleeping patterns can be achieved if you can develop a routine. Regular sleep is incentive enough for Christine and I.

At first Katherine didn’t like the bath so much. Only half of her body was warm under the water and Christine and I just were not efficient bathers. Over time, we’ve improved and so have Katherine disposition come bath time. She no longer cries but I would go so far as say she enjoys taking a bath. We’ve found she likes to push off and try to float around. This isn’t too conducive to the actually bathing process but she seems to enjoy it.

Katherine just loves mirrors. One of the highlights of the bathing experience is watching dad or mom in the mirror.

Lamaze Reunion

On Sunday, Christine and I attended a reunion for our Lamaze weekend hosted by Karen and Nelson Weichold. It was great to catch up with the other couples and swap labor and baby stories.  All of the babies were 3-4 weeks older than Katherine so it was great to see what to expect in the near future.

Karen and Nelson Weichold: daughter Reagan
June and Lew Hensley: son Luke
Tom and Julie Lucht: son Matthew
Eric and Suzi LeVine: son Sidney
Steve Bush and Christine Chang: daughter Katherine

It was great to see everyone.

Taking a Family Nap

Steve was tired and it was his turn to take care of Katherine. Usually this means doing some work and holding Katherine but Steve was tired. The result was Steve fell asleep holding Katherine. Mom snapped this memorable photo of Dad sleeping on the job.

Mirror, Mirror on The Crib

Katherine really loves her mirror. We attached it to her crib and she loves staring at it and hitting it with her fist. We’re pretty sure she can see her reflection in it.
